Why does the EES stay calculator show my Schengen days running out while I am in Gibraltar?

Short answer

If you were registered in the EES despite being exempt, the system has no record of you leaving the Schengen Area, because there are no immigration controls at the land border between Gibraltar and Spain to record your exit. The EU calculator therefore treats you as still present and counts your days down, and the remedy is to have the EES record erased.

Detailed answer

The Government of Gibraltar's Technical Notice of Tuesday 13 October 2026 confirms that many residents have reported this. Residents who were registered in the EES find that the EU's Check how long you can stay tool shows fewer than 90 days remaining, with the number falling each day, or no days remaining at all.

Why it happens

The EES records entries into and exits from the Schengen Area at its external borders. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026 there have been no immigration controls between Gibraltar and Spain, so when a resident who has an EES record crosses back into Gibraltar by land, no exit is recorded. The system then incorrectly treats them as still being in the Schengen Area. Holders of Gibraltar identity cards and civilian registration cards are exempt from EES registration and should not have a record at all.

Why it matters

The risk arises when you re-enter the Schengen Area somewhere other than the land border with Spain, for example flying from Gibraltar to London and then on to Paris. A border officer checking the EES may see an apparent overstay, and you could face difficulties or be refused entry.

What to do

  • Ask the competent authorities of the Schengen State that recorded your most recent entry into or exit from the Schengen Area to erase your EES record, as soon as possible and ideally before any planned trip.
  • Carry your passport and your Gibraltar identity card or civilian registration card, and present both at every Schengen external border.
  • If you are refused entry and cannot persuade the border guard that you are exempt, contact the Government of Gibraltar immediately at [email protected].
