Do you still have to cross the airport runway to get into Gibraltar?

Short answer

Vehicles no longer cross the runway: since 31 March 2023 all cars and motorcycles use the airport tunnel. Pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users can still walk across the runway on Winston Churchill Avenue when it is open, or use a separate pedestrian subway.

By car or motorcycle

Since 31 March 2023, all vehicles use the airport tunnel. It is the only regular route to and from the frontier, the airport, Eroski, Western Beach and Four Corners.

On foot, by bike or by scooter

  • You can still cross the runway at Winston Churchill Avenue, which closes briefly for flights.
  • Alternatively, use the pedestrian subway through the tunnel, reached via a footbridge from Eastern Beach.
