How do I get to Gibraltar from Malaga and vice versa?
Short answer
Drive (about 90 minutes), take a coach between Málaga and La Línea de la Concepción and walk across the frontier, or use a taxi or pre-booked transfer. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026 there have been no routine passport checks at the land border.
Detailed answer
By car, follow the A7 or N340 along the coast towards Cádiz and leave at junction 119 for the N351 to La Línea de la Concepción, then follow the signs for Gibraltar. The Government of Gibraltar puts the road journey from Malaga at approximately 90 minutes. Going the other way, take the same roads east towards Málaga. By coach, Avanza serves both Málaga and La Línea de la Concepción and sells tickets in both directions on its website, where you can check departure times and journey times. La Línea bus station is about a five-minute walk from the frontier, and you then walk into Gibraltar. Buses also run every half hour between Algeciras and La Línea, taking about 30 minutes, if your connection is via Algeciras. By taxi, there is a taxi rank on the Spanish side to the right of the border exit, on the CA-34/N-351 Avenida Príncipe de Asturias. In Gibraltar there is a taxi stand outside the airport terminal and a 24-hour radio taxi service. Pre-booked private transfers between Malaga airport and Gibraltar are also offered by a number of operators. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026, when the UK/EU Treaty on Gibraltar began to apply provisionally, there have been no entry and exit check booths at the land border. You can walk or drive between La Línea and Gibraltar without routine passport checks or stamps, but you should still carry valid travel documents. Schengen checks now happen where you enter or leave the Schengen Area: at Malaga airport if you fly in or out there, or at Gibraltar's airport and port if you arrive in Gibraltar from outside the Schengen Area. If you fly into Malaga from the UK, expect Schengen entry checks there, including registration under the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) where it applies. There are currently no customs controls at the land frontier. A duty-free allowance of €300 applies to goods carried by land between Gibraltar and Spain, with separate limits on tobacco, alcohol and fuel.
