Stepping off the ship
- Where do cruise ships dock in Gibraltar?
Cruise ships berth at the Gibraltar Cruise Terminal on the North Mole, on the western side of the Rock, about 1 km or a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
- Can I walk from the Gibraltar cruise terminal to town?
Yes. Casemates Square, at the northern end of Main Street, is about a mile from the cruise terminal on level pavements, around a 15 to 20-minute walk.
- How long does it take to walk from Gibraltar cruise port to Main Street?
Roughly 10–15 minutes (about 1 km, mostly flat).
- Is there a shuttle bus from Gibraltar cruise port to town?
Gibraltar's port and Tourist Board do not publish a public shuttle timetable from the cruise terminal, so any shuttle is arranged for your ship on the day. The terminal is within walking distance of Casemates Square and Main Street, and taxis wait at the terminal when ships are in port.
- Are taxis available at Gibraltar cruise port?
Yes—taxi ranks form outside the terminal on ship days.
- How far is the Rock of Gibraltar from the cruise terminal?
The Rock rises directly behind the town, which is about 1.5 km from the cruise terminal. With the cable car closed until 2027, most cruise passengers reach the Upper Rock by taxi Rock tour from the rank outside the terminal.
- How close are Gibraltar’s shops to the cruise port?
Very close—Main Street is ~10–15 minutes’ walk.
- Can I use euros when shopping in Gibraltar on a cruise stop?
Generally yes for cash, though change is typically given in Gibraltar pounds.
- How do I get to Europa Point from the Gibraltar cruise terminal?
Walk about 15 minutes from the cruise terminal into town to Market Place, next to Casemates Square, and take bus Route 2, which runs from Market Place to Europa Point. A taxi from the terminal is quicker.
What to do with your time ashore
- What can I see in Gibraltar in half a day from a cruise?
With about four hours, take a taxi Rock tour of the Upper Rock to see St Michael's Cave, the macaques and the Skywalk, then finish on Main Street or in Casemates Square. The cable car is closed until 2027, so the Rock has to be done by taxi or on foot.
- What is the best way to see Gibraltar quickly on a cruise stop?
Pre‑book a Rock highlights tour by taxi/minibus; finish on Main Street.
- What are the best tours in Gibraltar for cruise passengers?
Taxi or minibus Rock tours, dolphin safaris and guided walks remain the most popular choices. Since 17 September 2026, passengers can also book a guided tour of Europa Point Trinity Lighthouse, which should be pre-booked online.
- Can I book tours in Gibraltar last-minute when my cruise arrives?
Usually yes, but pre-booking helps on busy days. Guided tours of Europa Point Trinity Lighthouse should be booked online in advance, although ground-floor base entry can be bought at the lighthouse during opening hours.
- How does the cable car to the top of the Rock work, and is it open?
The Gibraltar Cable Car closed on Tuesday 18 November 2025 for a full rebuild and is not operating in 2026, with reopening expected in 2027. Until then, visitors reach the Upper Rock on foot, by licensed taxi Rock Tour, or by bus to the edge of the Nature Reserve.
- Can I visit the apes of Gibraltar during a short cruise stop?
Yes—the macaques are at the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
- Can I fit in St Michael’s Cave during a cruise visit to Gibraltar?
Yes—allow 45–60 minutes inside, plus travel time.
- Can I fit a dolphin trip into a Gibraltar cruise stop?
Usually, yes. Dolphin trips from Marina Bay, next to Ocean Village, last about 1 hour 15 minutes, so a late-morning or midday departure fits most port calls if you leave at least an hour's margin before all-aboard.
- Can I visit the Gibraltar National Museum on a cruise stop?
Yes, on a weekday or Saturday morning. The museum on Bomb House Lane, just off Main Street, opens Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, and is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
- Can I visit Spain from a cruise stop in Gibraltar?
Yes. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026 there have been no routine passport checks at the land frontier, so cruise passengers can walk into La Línea de la Concepción and back, provided they carry the documents their cruise line requires and leave plenty of time to return to the ship.
- What is there for children on a Gibraltar cruise stop?
The Upper Rock is the highlight for most families, with the macaques, St Michael's Cave and the Skywalk, and a child Nature Reserve ticket costs £22 with infants free. Shorter options include a dolphin trip from Marina Bay or a beach.
- Can I enjoy a Gibraltar cruise stop with limited mobility?
Yes, with some planning. Main Street and the town centre are largely flat and pedestrianised, while the Upper Rock is steep and best reached by taxi tour, as the cable car is closed until an expected reopening in 2027.
- Can I rent mobility scooters in Gibraltar for a cruise stop?
Yes—hire is available; pre‑booking is recommended on busy days.
- What can I do on a Gibraltar cruise stop if it is windy or raining?
Stay in town: the Gibraltar National Museum, Main Street and Casemates Square all work in bad weather. In severe wind the Upper Rock can close to visitors, and the cable car is out of service anyway while it is rebuilt.
- How busy does Gibraltar get when multiple cruise ships arrive?
Very busy. On days with two or more ships, Main Street, Casemates Square, the taxi ranks and the main Upper Rock sites all get crowded, and with the cable car closed until 2027, demand for taxi Rock tours is especially high.
Eating and shopping
- Where can cruise passengers eat near Gibraltar cruise terminal?
Casemates Square and Main Street are the closest clusters.
- Can I try traditional Calentita in Gibraltar on a cruise stop?
Yes—many cafés and restaurants serve it as a snack or starter.
- Is Gibraltar good for duty-free shopping on a cruise stop?
Less so than before. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026 most goods in Gibraltar shops carry a 15% transaction tax, and tobacco and alcohol also carry excise duty, so ordinary purchases in town are no longer duty-free.
- What souvenirs should I buy in Gibraltar on a cruise stop?
Good choices are Gibraltar stamps and coins, local art and crafts, books about Gibraltar and small Rock-themed gifts, available in the cruise terminal, in Casemates and along Main Street.
- What are the best things to buy in Gibraltar as a cruise passenger?
Perfume, cosmetics, spirits, watches and Gibraltar-themed gifts are the usual buys on Main Street. Prices now include a 15% transaction tax, and tobacco is less of a bargain after new minimum prices from Thursday 1 October 2026.
- Can I buy food souvenirs in Gibraltar to take back to my cruise ship?
Yes—look for packaged sweets, jams, spirits and British favourites.
Getting back on board
- What happens if I miss my cruise ship in Gibraltar?
Contact the port agent listed in your ship's daily programme straight away. If the ship has sailed, the crew normally leave your passport with the agent, and you will usually have to arrange and pay for travel to the next port or home yourself.

Schedules are published online by the port and cruise lines.
- Can cruise ships still call at Gibraltar after the treaty?
Yes. Under the Treaty, cruise ships may call at Gibraltar from EU ports and from the UK, while calls arriving directly from any other non-EU country are no longer permitted. Passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area are checked at the airport border crossing point.
- How much time do cruise passengers usually have in Gibraltar?
Typically 6–8 hours ashore.
- What is the dress code for visiting Gibraltar’s attractions on a cruise stop?
There is no formal dress code. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes for the Upper Rock's steps and uneven paths, bring sun protection and water in warm weather, and choose modest clothing if you plan to visit a cathedral or the mosque.
- Should I book a ship excursion or explore Gibraltar independently?
Going independently is usually cheaper and easy in Gibraltar, because the town is walkable and Upper Rock taxi tours run all day. A ship excursion costs more but the ship will wait if the tour runs late.
- Are shops in Gibraltar open on Sundays when a cruise ship is in port?
Many are. Most Gibraltar shops close on Sundays, but a good number of Main Street shops open when a cruise ship is in port, and some food shops, including Morrisons supermarket on Westside Road, open every Sunday regardless.
